C.J Barton, Sr. Molten Salt Fuel Patent

Introductory note: My father told me not long ago that he (with Warren Grimes) held the patent on the fuel formula for the ANP experiment. He also stated that he had developed the fuel formula for the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment, but that it was not patentable, due to some prior work by an outside party. A copy of the patent is found here.

Description/Abstract Molten-salt reactor fuel compositions consisting of mixtures of fluoride salts are reported. In its broadest form, the composition contains an alkali fluoride such as sodium fluoride, zirconium tetrafluoride, and a uranium fluoride, the latter being the tetrafluoride or trifluoride or a mixture of the two. An outstanding property of these fuel compositions is a high coeffieient of thermal expansion which provides a negative temperature coefficient of reactivity in reactors in which they are used.
