Those Diabolical Canadians

"[T]hose diabolical Canadians plan to build a 1,100-megawatt nuclear power plant 30 miles from the Maine border. Then those fiends want to sell us the cheap nuclear energy. Let's see, that would be about 130 windmill farms, now that's a lot of ugly." - Larry Davis, Kennebec Journal, February 17. 2008

Even more interesting is that the AECL ACR1000 being built by a consortium will be a merchant plant and has no guarantee of a regulated rate of return.

Really, they will have to come up with some sort of tolling agreement or make it a load following plant. There will be some sort of minimum payment. Probably enter into long term contracts with some power in reserve...10% or so, to "play the market" for the day-ahead and 10 minute incremental markets.

It'll b the first ACR1000. I hope they build it. VERY COOL!

The Canadians are truly diabolical.

They use ... they use horrible things like .... proven technologies ... and honest government and competent industrialists and ... and, ... and I can barely bring myself to pronounce those accursed words, but it must be said and known by all that Canadians use ... rational thinking.

My God ! How can that be?

The fiends ! The fiends !

Having once been deeply in love with a Canadian woman, I am an admirer of Canada and Canadians. They are a fine people, but at least one of them is fickled. That is, of course, another story.

The best new is that AECL will not take an ownership stake in the plant. This organization is in dire need of breaking up into separate public companies if those new business units want to be a part of the nuclear renaissance. Crown corporations have had great success opining up new technologies that were too risky for the private sector, but have a poor track record as players in mature markets.

This is a step in the right direction.
